The time of day can make all the difference in transforming an ordinary newborn session into something truly stunning. Natural light plays a huge role in setting the mood, highlighting details, and creating that soft, dreamy look that every parent loves in their newborn photos. Choosing the right time of day isn’t just about convenience—it’s about ensuring the perfect atmosphere for capturing those precious, fleeting moments with your little one. Let’s talk about the best time to schedule your Lifestyle Newborn session and why getting the timing right is key to creating those magical images. I’m about to share all my best tips on What is the Best Time of Day for a Lifestyle Newborn Session!

Why Does Timing Even Matter?

Timing for your Lifestyle Newborn session matters because natural light has the power to completely transform the mood and feel of your photos. Natural light can create a soft, warm glow that adds a dreamy quality to every image, or it can be harsh and unflattering if not timed correctly.

Photographers often talk about "Golden Hour," which is the hour after sunrise or before sunset, when the light is soft and golden, and "Blue Hour," just after sunset, when the light is cooler and more muted. While these terms usually apply to outdoor sessions, even indoor shoots benefit from the perfect time of day. For example, holding your session mid-morning allows for the right balance of natural light—enough to illuminate the room without overwhelming it—bringing out those soft, airy tones that make newborn sessions feel so magical and timeless.

The Perfect Time for Your Lifestyle Newborn Session

In my experience, scheduling your Lifestyle Newborn session for mid-morning—around 10:00am—is truly the sweet spot for capturing beautiful moments. At this time, the natural light floods in softly, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere that perfectly complements your little one’s delicate features. Babies are typically more alert and content after a restful night’s sleep, allowing for those sweet, genuine interactions between parents and their newborns. This relaxed vibe sets the stage for capturing heartfelt, candid moments filled with love and joy. Plus, the mid-morning timing gives families a chance to enjoy a leisurely start to their day, making it easier to focus on what really matters—cherishing those first precious days together.

I’ve worked in a variety of homes, and even if one room we want to use is a bit darker, my knowledge of lighting allows me to make those spaces appear brighter and more inviting in your images. This means we can utilize the unique charm of your home, ensuring every corner shines in its own way while keeping the focus on your beautiful newborn. Additionally, I also have a studio with a cozy, minimalistic vibe that serves as the perfect backdrop for capturing authentic family moments. The soft, neutral tones of the studio create a calming atmosphere, allowing your family to relax and connect while I document these fleeting early days. Whether we’re in your home or my studio, mid-morning sessions provide the ideal blend of natural light and a tranquil environment, making it easier to capture the genuine love and joy that fills the room. It’s all about creating a space where you feel comfortable, allowing those heartfelt moments to unfold naturally before my lens.

Adjusting for Seasons and Weather

Living in Columbus, GA, we’re truly fortunate to enjoy beautiful weather most of the time. But I know you might be wondering, what happens if it rains on the day of your lifestyle newborn session, or if your home doesn’t get as much light as usual? Maybe you’re worried about having smaller windows that don’t let in a lot of natural light. Let me put your mind at ease — there’s no need to worry because we have plenty of options!

If we do get one of those rare rainy days, we can always reschedule for the next day. But if rescheduling isn’t possible, I come prepared with a flash that brightens up any space while still giving your photos that soft, natural light feel. In fact, the photos below were taken on a dark, stormy day with almost no light coming in through the windows, but you’d never guess a flash was used thanks to careful posing and lighting techniques.

And if you're concerned about your home not being bright enough, there’s always the option of using my studio. With large windows that let in loads of natural light and crisp white walls that reflect and soften it, the studio creates a warm, cozy, and timeless atmosphere that brings so much joy to your photos.

Preparing For Your Newborn Session

Preparing for your newborn session should feel calm and enjoyable, and that's why I love scheduling mid-morning sessions. It gives you a chance to wake up, enjoy your coffee, and ease into the day before getting yourself and the family ready. With the soft mid-morning light streaming through the windows, creating that perfect glow, I always recommend light-toned, pastel, or neutral clothing for a timeless look. If you’re borrowing a dress from my client closet, all you need to do is pick out the perfect accessories and a few different tops for your husband that you think might pair well with your dress. I suggest laying everything out the night before to make the morning smoother.

To take one more thing off your plate, I work with a wonderful hair and makeup artist who can either come to your home or meet you at the studio. If you prefer to do your own hair and makeup, here’s a tip: let Dad take a bath or shower with the baby so you can have some uninterrupted time to get ready! I know how busy getting everyone dressed can be, and sometimes breakfast gets overlooked in the rush. That’s why I always bring a delicious brunch tray with me, or have one ready at the studio, so no one goes hungry—because no one should feel hangry during such a special session!
